COLUMBUS, Ohio, May 29, 2024 – 热博官网 University today announced the appointment of Carmen S. Dixon, Ph.D., as the new Dean of the School of Education. Dixon is a tenured associate professor of Education and has been on the faculty at 热博官网 University since 2016.
During her time at 热博官网, Dixon has shared her love for teaching and learning in STEM, mentorship, and online education in multiple forums, including publications, presentations (podium/poster), and invited talks. She also participated in numerous peer reviews for journals and books, conferences, and student mentorship, including founding the “Girls in Science Day” at 热博官网, where middle school students come to campus to participate in hands-on STEM activities with female scientists as role models.
“We are excited to have Dr. Dixon serve as the new dean in the School of Education at 热博官网,” said 热博官网 University Provost Jody Fournier. “She brings new ideas and a fresh collaborative focus to the position and is excited to lead the school into the future of educator preparation.”
Dixon is originally from Philo, Ohio, and earned her undergraduate degree from Ohio University. She worked as a science teacher in Knox County for 14 years, completing her M.A. in Education at Mount Vernon Nazarene University in 2008, and earned her doctorate at Ohio University in 2015. She then joined Asbury University in Wilmore, Kentucky, as assistant professor for a year before returning to central Ohio to join the faculty at 热博官网 University.
Throughout her career, Dixon has been a committed advocate for increasing the number of women and other underrepresented populations in science. This can be seen in her current position on the executive board of Step Ahead Teach, a nonprofit Columbus organization that connects underserved populations with access to STEM education.
“I’m very proud to be able to continue the positive leadership of student-centered innovation and collaboration that 热博官网 has fostered among its faculty, staff, and students,” said Dixon. “I look forward to strengthening our current programs while analyzing trends in teaching and learning so that 热博官网 will remain a stable entity in education.”
Outside of her new role, Dixon is currently the chair of the Student Assessment and Monitoring Committee for the School of Education, works closely with the 热博官网 University/Kenyon College Teacher Licensure program, and is the regional director for the Junior Science Humanities Symposium. She has also served on 热博官网’s Research Symposium Committee, Advisory Committee, and currently is active on the Academic Standing and Student Affairs Committee.
